The mother of three who were reportedly abandoned in a dismal Houston-area apartment with the remains of their deceased brother apologized – but insisted she checked them regularly and was not aware of the boy’s death.
Gloria Y. Williams, 35, proclaimed her innocence behind bars at Harris County Jail Thursday as she remains in custody on charges of injuring a child by omission and tampering with evidence.
“I’m sorry. I didn’t,” she said in a prison interview with KHOU news station.
When asked if she knew her 8-year-old son Kendrick Lee was dead, she replied, “No.”
Williams said she stops to check on the kids from time to time.
“I checked them every two weeks,” Williams told the news station.
She was arrested after her eldest child, a 15-year-old boy, called 911 on Sunday to report that he had been living with his brother’s body for about a year.
When authorities arrived, they found the teenager and two other siblings, aged 10 and 7, living alone with Kendrick’s body in the apartment, who had no power.
The younger ones appeared to be suffering from malnutrition and physical injuries, authorities said.
An autopsy determined that Kendrick died of “murderous violence with multiple blunt wounds.”
Williams’ boyfriend Brian W. Coulter has been charged with murder for the boy’s death.
It is not known where the couple stayed while the surviving children lived in poverty.
The children are now in the care of child protection services.
Authorities have said it appears the children have different fathers, one of whom is deceased and another who is not in the photo, ABC13 reported.
